Up-and-Over Garage Doors for Every Home

An up-and-over garage door from The Garage Door Company operates as a single solid panel that swings outward and then lifts overhead, efficiently positioning itself above the garage opening when raised. Available in durable GRP or steel, this door style is known for its easy operation, low maintenance, and robust design. Up-and-over doors are a practical, space-saving choice that offers reliable security and a classic look, making them ideal for busy households and a variety of home styles.

Standard up-and-over doors come in a range of sizes to fit most garages, with custom options available. When properly installed, these doors provide strong security features to protect your home and belongings.

What can you expect?

Up and over garage doors are what you could call a ‘no-nonsense’ design, which makes them a practical choice for most garages and driveways. But simplicity does not mean a compromise on quality.

They are designed to last, constructed in a range of materials, with well-manufactured components that make them simple to use, robust and secure.

Up and over doors can also be automated, which is particularly useful when you have a large opening where the door may be relatively heavy to operate.

Up and Over Garage Door FAQs

The cost varies depending on size, material, and additional features, but up-and-over doors are generally an affordable garage door option compared to other styles.

An up-and-over garage door is sometimes referred to as a canopy door or a single-panel garage door, due to its single solid panel that swings out and up.

When properly installed, up-and-over garage doors offer reliable security with sturdy materials and locking mechanisms to protect your home and belongings.

Standard up-and-over garage doors come in a variety of sizes designed to fit most garages, with custom sizing available to suit specific needs.

Regular cleaning and occasional lubrication of moving parts are usually sufficient to keep an up-and-over door functioning smoothly and reliably.

Yes, up-and-over garage doors can be automated, but the type of door gear influences how this is done. Retractable up-and-over doors are best suited for automation because they slide fully into the garage on horizontal tracks. Due to legislation from The Door & Hardware Federation, we will not automate Canopy up-and-over doors.

Both Canopy and Retractable Up-and-Over garage doors offer a practical and reliable solution, but they differ in how they operate, the space they require and their suitability for electric automation.

Canopy Up-and-Over Garage Doors are a popular and cost-effective choice for single garages, typically up to 8ft (2438mm) wide. When fully open, approximately one-third of the door extends outside the garage, creating a canopy effect. The door operates using a spring-assisted mechanism with lifting cables, allowing for straightforward manual operation. Automation is not available.

Retractable doors are an increasingly popular choice thanks to their smooth operation, reliability and suitability for electric automation. Unlike canopy doors, retractable doors use side-mounted lifting arms and springs, with the door travelling along horizontal tracks into the garage. When fully open, the door sits almost entirely inside the garage. Retractable mechanisms are standard on larger Up-and- Over garage doors over 8ft (2438mm) wide, although they are also available for smaller doors. Retractable doors are very popular amongst new build properties due to being automated at a later date.

One consideration is that the lifting arms sit within the garage opening, slightly reducing the available drive-through width.

If you’re looking for a simple, affordable garage door with maximum drive-through width, a Canopy Up-and-Over door could be the ideal solution.

If you have a larger garage door or would like the option of electric automation, a Retractable Up-and-Over door is generally the better choice. You can have a manual Retractable door and at a later date add on the operator to the existing door. This does have many benefits if the door starts to become too heavy to lift or for extra convenience.

Glazing for Cardale up and over and side hinged doors is available in plain black, translucent or transparent finishes and in a range of lattice and feature styles. Transparent or clear windows are see-through and allow light into the garage. Translucent windows have a stippled effect which allows light into the garage but are not see-through. Plain black windows are decorative only and don’t allow any light into the garage.

Our glazed windows are constructed from shatter-resistant polycarbonate with a stippled, translucent anti-reflective finish. Selected Cardale garage door designs are available with glazing, with a range of attractive designs to blend with your house, windows and doors. If the door does not have glazing in its standard design, the window panels will be fitted to the top design detail. Glazing is not available in all designs.

At The Garage Door Company, our Up-and-Over garage doors are available in Steel, GRP (Glass Reinforced Polyester) and Timber (Cedar wood).

Yes, all our up-and-over doors are available in made to measure sizing, under with minimum and maximum sizes provided from our manufacturer, Cardale, to fit unique garage dimensions. Different door designs do have different restrictions. Bespoke sizes will affect overall cost than standard sizes and require a longer lead time.

On single canopy doors the frame legs are 54mm each side totalling 108mm. For single and double retractable doors the frame legs are 70mm each side, totalling 140mm. The frame head across both single canopy and retractable gears is 45mm. On double retractable doors the frame head will be 68mm.

For Steel or Timber Doors with Frame Header 45mm High and 40mm Deep, this is dependent on the size of door height. Example: For standard sizes 6’6” (1981mm) = 1735mm. 7’0″ (2134mm) = 1890. 7’2″+ (2200mm) = 1965mm. For GRP doors with Frame Header 68mm High and 60mm Deep, this will equal 1880mm.
